moss co. kicks off 2018 with the indivisual ep from the supremely talented mariano mateljan. mariano and label boss, archie hamilton have been talking about an ep on moss co. for a number or years, and it is a tribute to both of their perfectionism that it finally lands in all good stores april 6th. made in his home studio in split, the record came together from several analogue jam sessions. aimed squarely at the small hours, the deeply trippy and haunting tracks take influence from the micro house of the 90 labels like cabinet and perlon and producers like schatrax and matthew johnson. the record is a fine example of marianos ever-maturing sound timeless minimalistic house music that will cast a spell over dance floors the world over.

following the acclaimed first album of al sunny released in 2017, favorite recordings proudly presents this single remix package of open up your eyes. al sunny is a young composer emerging from the french soul music scene. soon after learning the guitar, he started composing and became involved in numerous projects and collaborations. he quickly discovered deep inside himself the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as tim maia, america, al green, and al jarreau. during his studies he met musicians including florian pellissier, and it s then thanks to florian that he met pascal rioux, founder and a&r of favorite recordings. together they produced time to decide, a first album acclaimed by many tastemakers and gaining a solid success in japan. one of the highlights of the lp was the track open up your eyes, which disclosed the premise of al sunny music style, infused with blue-eyed-soul, pop and folk. also tainted with a funky dancefloor color, open up your eyes was a perfect match to build a nice remixes package for djs. on the a side, bruno patchworks hovart delivers again a hot soulful/disco version of the song with his famous touch. as for the b side, favorite recordings asked the canadian producer jex opolis (good timin records), with a disco style slightly more oriented in electronic and house vibes.

gnawa is a uniquely moroccan sound with roots in islam and links to a healing ritual called lila (arabic for night). from this heritage comes innov gnawa, the only new york-based gnawa group made from moroccan natives, led by the mâalem (master) hassan ben jaafer. in 2016, pique-nique recordings presented their debut ep together and, since then, the band have also featured on bambro koyo ganda from bonobo s latest album. aicha is their much anticipated follow-up. alongside the joyous call and response between the maalem and the group that s common in gnawa, there are also hints of electronic programming interspersed between the traditional live instrumentation no doubt an influence of nicolas jaar collaborator dave harrington who produced the ep.

uncage founder marco faraone debuts on rekids, dropping four techno cuts on the label’s special projects series this march. the italian producer has had a busy few years touring north america, south america and europe, not to mention dropping releases on labels like ovum and tenax recordings. meanwhile his uncage imprint, which he runs alongside norman methner, has quickly cemented a reputation for quality house and techno, releasing music from artists like eduardo de la calle, pablo mateo and fabio della torre (under his corcos moniker). with its rolling percussion and a heady spoken word sample, find the song introduces a quintessential rekids record. thunderous kick drums and piercing stabs then form the high-octane arcane before the dark and ominous justice demonstrates industrial elements and floating atmospherics. tying it all together, tantalizing melodies join echoing effects for the final track titled layers.

here to hell is an australian label project conceived by the presets’ kim moyes, and revolver resident dj mike callander. inspired by a johnny cash song, by the record industry in general, and by the spirit of commercial suicide, here to hell celebrates the pointlessness of everything: it’s the perfect reason to do only what feels good. together kim and mike also record and remix as zero percent, and along for the ride they’ve invited aussie musicians and remixers from all over to celebrate techno, electro, aussie rock, ambient and whatever they think sounds good on repeat in your headphones.

violet and bleid met last year in lisbon, at the radio quântica studios. in the very same day, they impromptu started working together on a track: a cover of underground sound of lisbon’s so get up to celebrate international womens day. together, alongside a crew of young lisbon djs and activists, they also run the queer techno party mina, one of the most vital things going on in the city’s nightlife - the picture in the artwork was taken in the backstage of one of those infamous, dark-room-equipped parties.
bleid remixed naive001’s togetherness by violet, and that dope rework made it to rroxymore’s bag (as heard at berghain) and was played on bbc radio 6, rinse fm and +++. the pair became friends, started bouncing ideas about production techniques, rap skills and the importance (or lack thereof) of the classics in dance music. making more music together happened naturally.
naive002 feels like a continuation of naive’s first release in some ways: the jungle-inspired chopped breaks, sonic synth work and oneiric pads are still there but gain a heavier, perhaps more somber tone at times, exploding into depth or ecstasy at others.

“we are what you think we are” is a 3 part compilation celebrating 10 releases from new york-based label and promoters lost soul enterprises. the groupings of artists on each 12” represent slightly different sonic territory, from darkwave and synthpop, to acid and electro, to industrial techno, all of which together have come to define the identity of the label and the community surrounding its legendary parties.
